Cuetec AVID Surge Break Cue, Black and Gold

The AVID Surge Break Cue in black and gold combines a black finish, silver and gold Power Twist rings, and a steel collar and butt cap. It’s a full-length, wrapless break cue built on the same platform as the rest of Cuetec’s Surge series: glass composite bonded to hard maple, an extra-hard phenolic tip and an Air Light front end.

Cuetec’s MSRP is $415, the lowest of the Surge break cues. Ours is $375.

Break cue or break/jump cue?

This trips people up. The Surge break cue is a break cue only. It doesn’t split into a short jump cue. Cuetec makes a separate Surge jump cue in black and gold with its own 15-inch jump handle and a different taper (Power Lift instead of Power Pro). If you want both, you’re buying two cues. They do share the same 3/8×14 Cuetec joint.

How it’s built

Cuetec developed the Surge series using what it learned from its AVID playing cues, the Cynergy Breach break cue and the Cynergy Propel jump cue. The shaft is multi-ply glass composite bonded to A-grade kiln-dried hard maple. More than 10 inches of the front end is bored out, which Cuetec calls Air Light construction, to reduce mass and deflection. Up front is a 7 mm Power+ phenolic ferrule and an extra-hard Power+ phenolic tip on a glass pad.

Weight and length

The butt and shaft are each 29 inches. Standard weight is 19 ounces, with the shaft at 4.3 ounces, and the Acueweight Generation II system adjusts weight in quarter-ounce steps. The bumper takes Cuetec’s Duo Smart Extension.
