Cuetec AVID Surge Break Cue, Brown Stain, Sky Woodward Signature
The AVID Surge Break Cue in brown stain is Cuetec’s Sky Woodward signature break cue. It has silver and gold Power Twist rings, a steel collar and steel butt cap with laser-etched Cuetec and AVID logos, and no wrap. It’s built for breaking: a Power+ phenolic tip on a glass pad, a 7 mm phenolic ferrule and Cuetec’s Surge Power Pro taper.
Cuetec’s MSRP is $429. Our last price was $389, and it’s out of stock right now. Two other Surge break cues are in stock: the gray Florian Kohler Edition at $389 and the black and gold at $375. If you want the brown Sky Woodward finish, the matching Surge jump cue in brown is in stock too.
Do you need a break cue if you already have a good playing cue?
That depends on how you play. If you shoot casually a couple of times a month, your playing cue can handle the break. If you play leagues or a lot of 9-ball, a break cue does two things for you. It saves your playing cue’s tip and shaft from repeated full-power hits. And a phenolic tip barely compresses at impact, so more of your stroke goes into the cue ball.
The trade-off: a phenolic tip has very little grip, so it’s not a cue you’d want to use for spin shots. Use it for the break and switch back.
How it’s built
Cuetec bonds multiple plies of glass composite to A-grade kiln-dried hard maple. The front of the shaft uses Air Light construction, which takes weight out of the tip end. The 29-inch shaft weighs 4.3 ounces, and the cue is 19 ounces standard, adjustable in quarter-ounce steps with Acueweight Generation II.
Joint and bumper
The joint is a 3/8×14 Cuetec joint. The bumper accepts the DUO Smart Extension, which Cuetec also uses on the Surge jump handle.
