In darts, a player’s turn consists of three consecutive dart throws, and this is why a set of darts contains three darts.
However, different dartboards require different types darts, and there are many kinds of dart games.
This leads many of our Billiards Direct customers to ask, “Should I buy one set of darts or several?”
Should You Buy Single or Multiple Dart Sets?
You should know that both steel-tip darts or soft-tip darts can be used on a regular dartboard, while only soft-tip darts can be used on an electronic dartboard.
Some players prefer the consistency of a single dart set, and other players feel more comfortable using different dart sets for different types of games.

If you need additional help selecting your very first set of darts, be sure to read our blog post on How to Buy a Dart Set.
Materials Used in Dart Sets
Darts are made from three main materials: plastic/nylon, metal, and carbon fiber, and each type has it’s own set of unique characteristics.
Plastic/nylon darts suit the most varied number of playing situations but are the least durable.

Metal darts (aluminum, tungsten, nickel, and brass) are the heaviest and have the lowest chance of bounce outs.
Carbon fiber or composite darts offer the best combination of both versatility and durability.
