Rasson Iron Man 9 Foot Pool Table in Black
The Iron Man is Rasson at its most stripped back: a low, matte black cabinet on four round steel legs, with no carving, no arches and no pedestal. It reads as industrial and a little bit loft. It’s also the least expensive way to get a full 9 foot Rasson slate table, which is exactly why a lot of people end up here.
Rasson builds the Iron Man in one size and one finish: 9 foot, black. You choose drop pockets or a ball return.
What holds it up
The legs are iron pipe with a powder-coated matte black finish, one at each corner, each ending in a Rasson-designed leveler. Round steel legs don’t chip like wood legs, and powder coat shrugs off the shoe scuffs and vacuum bumps that wear down painted finishes. They also keep the base visually light, so a big 9 foot table doesn’t feel quite as massive in the room.
Above the legs, the support beam is MDF and wood, and the apron is MDF wrapped in high-pressure laminate (HPL). That’s how Rasson hits this price. It’s a sound structure for a home game room. It just isn’t the aluminum frame you’ll find on the Wolf or OX II.
The playing surface
You get Rasson slate, 25mm (1 inch) thick and cut in three pieces, the thickness most quality home tables use. It’s leveled with bolts at the frame, and the leg levelers take care of an uneven floor. The rails are solid wood with an HPL cap, the cushions are Rasson Pro rubber in the K55 profile, and the sights are aluminum. The corner castings are aluminum alloy with a baked finish, and a thin aluminum trim line runs along the top of the cabinet.
Is a 9 foot table right for your room?
This is the question to settle before anything else, because the Iron Man only comes in 9 foot. The playfield is 50″ x 100″, and Rasson lists the overall table at 115″ x 65″ x 33″. With a standard 58-inch cue on every side, you need about 13’10” x 18’0″ of clear floor. A 52-inch short cue kept on the wall for tight shots can shave close to a foot off each dimension.
If your room falls short of that, don’t force it. A cramped 9 foot is less fun to play than a comfortable 8 foot. The Rasson Hero and Acurra both come in 7 and 8 foot and are worth a look.
Home game room or bar?
The Iron Man’s low price and black, no-nonsense look make it tempting for a bar, a man cave or a shop. It’s a great fit for a home or a private club room. For a busy bar with drinks on every surface, keep in mind that the apron and beam are MDF under laminate. The laminate is waterproof, but MDF swells if liquid gets into a seam and sits. Wipe spills quickly and keep mops away from the base, and it will hold up fine. Also know that most coin-op bar leagues play on 7 foot tables, so if league practice is the goal, a 9 foot may not match what you’ll see on league night.
Drop pockets or ball return
With drop pockets, each ball stays in the pocket it went into. The ball return sends every pocketed ball to one spot at the foot of the table, so racking is quick. The ball return adds $100 and is the more popular pick for home rooms.
