At Billiards Direct, we often get asked “What is shuffleboard wax?“.
“Shuffleboard Wax” is known by many names, including shuffleboard sand, shuffleboard powder, or shuffleboard dust.
This article shows you how to select and use shuffleboard wax on your own shuffleboard table, in order to improve your table’s overall responsiveness.
Shuffleboard Table Wax
Silicone is used for most forms of shuffleboard wax, and it is often called shuffleboard “sand” due to its’ powdery, sandy substance.
The purpose of using shuffleboard wax is for your table is to speed up the table’s response, and minimize the friction between the shuffleboard puck and the table itself.
Shuffleboard table wax can also help to preserve your shuffleboard table and increase the years you’ll have with it.
Shuffleboard Wax Speeds
Shuffleboard wax exists in different numbered grades, and the numbers represent how much friction will be reduced on the play surface.
For long shuffleboard tables, like 14 ft shuffleboards and longer, try Shuffleboard Wax with a high number, which will give you less friction, and hence, more speed.
For shorter shuffleboard tables, like 9ft shuffleboards, start with a low number of Shuffleboard Wax, which will increase the friction and help ensure a proper level of traction.
How To Apply Wax To A Shuffleboard
When applying wax to your shuffleboard table, apply it evenly, and make sure you cover the entire playfield.
After applying the Shuffleboard Wax, use a clean towel to lightly buff the table; the goal is for your table surface to be completely smooth.
In order to properly maintain your shuffleboard table, it’s recommended to apply Shuffleboard Wax 2 to 3 times per month.
