You find yourself sitting at a tournament poker table; are you early, middle, late, or blind?
No need to be confused. Read on an allow us to explain the various positions at the poker table.
Early Poker Positions
The first through third players to the dealer’s left, or to the left of the button, are the “early” positions, which is also known as “under the gun.” These players bet first so it is typically wise for them to play it safe, or “tight,” meaning they place conservative bets in order to keep a strong position for upcoming hands.
Middle Poker Positions
The two seats after the early positions and the middle positions, sometimes called the “lojack” and the “highjack” positions. These players will typically bet like the early positions and take a more conservative tack.
However, the middle positions have seen the bets from the early positions and are able to potentially have more information and thus bet bigger.
Late Poker Positions
Players to the left of the middle positions are the late positions, also known as the “button” or “cutoff” positions. These players have the most information and as a result are typically in a better position to bet bigger and or win larger amounts of money.
Blinds
Blinds bet before any of the other players and they rotate one position to the left after each hand.
The “big blind” will automatically bet a pre-specified amount before the hand begins, and the “small blind” will automatically place a bet that is half the amount of the “big blind.”
